The Charitable Trust was initiated with a vision to educate & provide a safe haven for the specially-abled children of the community of plantation
workers of Munnar, Kerala. The mission, in 1991, with the foundation of the DARE School Project, was to educate, rehabilitate & generate sustainable
livelihood possibilities for the specially-abled young adults who graduated from the School. The children are imparted education in functional
academics & trained in social & self-help skills along with vocational skills through their formative years. The graduating youth are further given the
opportunity to interact & be nurtured into artists by experts in their respective craft domains from across the globe, developing unique traditional craft
techniques from a world community of artists.
The vocational skill development program designed to develop their dexterity & concentration organically evolved through a variety of skills ranging
from cooking, baking, sewing, handmade-paper & candle making as an integral part of the DARE School special education curriculum. The ‘High
Range Preserve’ Welfare Initiative was the first & one of the most popular initiatives. Fresh mountain strawberries were used to curate a special recipe
which celebrated the Whole Strawberry. What started as a small 50 bottle unit crafting only the signature Whole Strawberry Preserve distributed locally.
Three decades on, Nisarga today produces a variety of Jams, Preserves, Sauces & Squashes with naturally grown Oranges, Pink Guava & Passion Fruits
and has now become a global brand with a circulation of 1,00,000 bottles. The therapeutic powers of nature are affectionately embraced by the youth
who have severe mental disabilities where they plant and grow flowers, fruit and vegetables. The flowers & ferns are then collected as natural additions
to the Candles & wood-free handmade paper. The creativity & ethical responsibility is further endorsed through the creation of a wide range of handmade
products which are curated with the adoption of sustainable production methods like recycling, up-cycling and the use of native & natural
materials.
In the three decades of #EmpoweringTheSpeciallyabled, Srishti Trust has grown to 8 Welfare Institutes ranging from A Natural DyeHouse — Aranya
Natural, A Wood-free Paper Studio — Athulya Paper Studio, A Food Preserve Unit — Nisarga, A Bakery & Café as well as poly-houses that grow
vegetables naturally.
The Trust is supported by TATA Consumer Products Limited & TATA Trusts.
